Does not sharpen as described. Grinds a negative rake into cutting point.

Drill Doctor response: Gives us a call - we can walk you through the process to achieve the same success millions of others are enjoying.

I'm a DIY and my 750X has been great for my needs. It does take some time to sharpen the larger bits but the convenience of having it available is great. The cost of a new bit may be under ten dollars but the time and expense of going to the local box store and buying it is prohibitive.

Summary :   Homeowner grade sharpener. Way too slow.
    Quality
    Price
    Value

If you are a home hobbyist where time does not equal money this sharpener would be a reasonable addition to your workshop. For a business or shop it is not practical. It is extremely slow to sharpen a drill bit. Way too much turning required (20 turns minimum for a 3/8" bit and at least 50-60 for a 1/2" bit). The alignment process with the two spring loaded flute tabs seems to struggle with bits that you have previously split point. The company offers two wheel selections. It comes with the finer wheel. This coarseness of grit produces a reasonably sharp bit but it takes forever. The coarse wheel is little bit faster but does not offer a nice finished cutting edge. Changing wheels is just another time consuming step. If you are on the clock you can buy bits cheaper than sharpening them with this sharpener (750X). If it takes 10 minutes to sharpen a 1/2 bit (even at a low shop rate of $60/hr.... you can buy a reasonable quality 1/2" bit for under $10). The wrist rotating motion, with hand tense and pressure maintained to keep the chucks lobe on the cam post, does produce some discomfort after doing a few bits. My replacement sharpener cost a fair bit more than the 750X and sharpens a bit in under 1 min and is accurate to 0.002mm. So in conclusion, the Drill Doctor sharpener is an OK homeowner sharpener where you might sharpen a couple of bits a week. But if you sharpen bits daily, and time is money, it will end up costing you more money than it saves.

Drill Doctor response: We are glad you found a sharpener for your business that will save you time/money. (We hope it's a Darex machine!) The Drill Doctor models are indeed designed for DIY workshops, hobbyists and professionals that have low volume drill sharpening needs. Large bits do take longer to sharpen as more material needs to be removed, and our industrial line (Darex) is designed specifically for professionals with sharpening requirements such as yours. Thank you for your review, we appreciate customer feedback.

It gets frustrating how a new bit gets destroyed second time drilling anything harder than aluminum. Here at my auto shop, I considered drill bits disposable. Once dull, throw them away and let Sam SnapOn fill the empty spots ponce a month.
Bought the Drill Doctor 750 in 1998 and buggered the first bit I tried sharpening. What a bust.
    Move up 13 years...
Pulled it out, read the instructions and tried it their way. WOW! What a cool machine. so simple, so effective. I hunted down and sharpened every bit I could find!
Now when my bits go dull, I don't pitch them to the can. I put them upside down in their spots, and once a month, sharpen them all back up again.
Not only had Drill Doctor paid for itself, the edges on my resharpened bit are sharper and seem to last longer than new.
    I'm sold.

Summary :   This sharpener is a fail compared to the classic 500
    Price
    Value
    Quality

I purchased this after using the classic 500 for years until it got dropped and was broken. The tool truck I purchased if from said the 750X was their best model, the most features.
Drill bits are almost always 118 or 135 degree. The 118 degree bits are usually soft HSS, have no spit point, and are cheap enough to be disposable. If you buy this for 118 bits, you will never recover your investment in it's purchase or time.
The real test and the best reason to buy this, or any sharpener is for cobalt 135 bits with split points.

The first thing you will notice is that it doesn't even have a setting for 135 bits, you have to select 118 and go plus or minus 10 degrees trial and error to find what works best. My math tells me that you cannot get 135 by adding or subtracting in increments of 10. The funny part is on the point angle adjustment it only has two settings, 118 or 135.
The split point doesn't. it is a complete fail compared to the classic 500, I have tried every bit in every configuration, I cannot split the bit so it looks or works like the original bit, remember I have used the classic 500 for over ten years, and I can sharpen any 118 bit on a bench grinder so it works like new.
The adjustable point depth would be awesome if I wanted to sharpen my already sharp bits, then I would only lose a little bit of bit to the process. The reality is that I am sharpening a dull bit. Chipped off edges. Overheated. A bit in the need of being sharpened, therefore this further adjustment is also a waste of time, and added complexity.
The price is low, but this unit is not worth that for any bit that one would truly need to save.

I love my Drill Doctor 750X! I have sharpened many of my old 118 degree drill bits with excellent results. I feel like the guy who stopped hitting himself with a hammer - now I can actual drill a hole without angst! I had to drill out a couple of wheel studs recently and what a difference my DD-sharpened bits made!
I will confess to missing a step once in my sharpening - early on. I made a mess of the drill bit - I figured I would have to throw it away. But, once I realized my error, I was able to restore the drill bit to new life (took about 25 minutes of repeated sharpening cycles).
Great products result in satisfied customers, of which I am one. Next on my wish list is your paddle bit sharpener.

Summary :   Works well for 118 degree not so much for 135

I had a DD 500 previously and broke it so I had heard good thing about the X series and bought one. I have a good set of 135 split points that a couple needed work. 1st mistake start on a cheap bit to learn. This new system is similar to the old 500 but there are differences. The MTO dial needs to have positive detentes to hold position. The machine vibrates quite a bit and the dial tends to move. I have mark my main position and have to turn it back every time i realign the bit. The sharpening itself goes well I think there is more slop in the cam system than in the old version. I wish there were positive detentes or lines for 118 and 135 angles verses the numbers it is hard to get the angle perfect when switching from one to the other. I have made lines to do that but it isn't perfect. I just can't quite seem to make the grind surface as smooth as I could with my old DD. The biggest fail of all is the splitting of the points. I have tried everything I can think of. Every time it consistently under splits the point and to top it off with the new approach it grinds off so much of the heel that when you align the bit again it will not grip properly and the geometry changes. I have stopped splitting 135's and have been changing some to 118 and splitting those which kind of works but only with bigger bits. I have sharpened about 50 bits now with varying degrees of success. Will i keep using it "yes" but only because I don't have much of an option otherwise. When on the Drill Press we have started pre drilling and moving up to bigger bits that have angles changed from 135 to 118. I am interested in the A 390 but after the experience with the DD750X I am a little leery of it.
